Bodmin Moor / Woodland

Golitha Falls and Draynes Wood

A moor-edge loop from Draynes Bridge: first the riverside spur through ancient sessile oak woodland to the Golitha Falls cascades, then out on single-track lanes through Common Moor and back to the bridge. Two kinds of quiet in one short run.

Practical notes

Best for

  • Short, sheltered woodland miles
  • Easy recovery running
  • A quiet alternative to the coast in poor weather

Watch for

  • Wet, mossy boulders directly beside the falls, best walked rather than run
  • Tree roots across the narrower sections of riverside path
  • Single-track lanes with occasional farm traffic on the Common Moor leg
  • Limited phone signal through the wooded valley

Facilities

  • Small Cornwall Council car park at Redgate (charges apply)
  • No toilets or facilities on site

Season

A dependable wet-weather route. The tree canopy holds off steady rain in the wood, though the falls section gets genuinely slick after it.

Parking
Small pay car park at Redgate, on the lane above Draynes Wood. It is not large and can fill on dry weekends.
Public transport
No practical public transport link. This route needs its own transport.
Conditions
Root-crossed woodland path with a boulder-strewn stretch beside the falls, then quiet tarmac lanes with moorland verges.
Navigation
The riverside path is signed but braided; stick to the main line. On the lane loop, keep left at each junction to circle back through Common Moor.
